The first electrically illuminated Christmas tree was created by Edward H. Johnson (an associate of Thomas Edison). While vice president of the Edison Electric Lighting Company he had Christmas tree lights made for him, which consisted of 80 red, white and blue large lite balls. He hung them on his family Christmas tree at home and once the media heard of the story Christmas lights soon became mainstream, as large New York stores began displaying lite Christmas trees in their windows. Today, Christmas lights have become apart of popular holiday traditions.
